Polar Bear Adaptations

The large and furry creature has yellow-ish white fur so it can camouflage from it’s prey. The polar bear is a large white bear from the north. The interesting creature has short round ears to conserve heat. A polar bear eats seals (especially the type called ringed seals). The polar bear can swim several hours with ease.

Description of environment

Polar bears only live in the arctic, where there is floating ice that they can drift on when tiered of swimming. It is cold and windy where they have to find shelter for their cubs so that they are safe and warm.

Behavioural adaptations

The polar bear is frequently touching and grooming their cubs so they can protect them and don’t get hurt by other polar bears. The male polar bears have the aggression to steal food caught by other polar bears during breeding season so that the baby polar bear can have food to eat and will not starve. All polar bears have thick paws to help them run on ice when it’s prey are moving this also helps them to walk around without slipping and falling over.

Physical appearance

The polar bear has a long neck to help the polar bears head stay up in the water.  The polar bear has a short tail, this helps them to survive in the cold weather. This large bear can swim several hours without stopping for a break and without eating any food.

Diet

The polar normally eats seals (especially the type called ringed seals). A polar bear can live up to five days without eating, this allows them to have more time to catch their prey. If the polar bear can’t find any seals they tend to eat walruses or whales. Seals take up most of their diet.

Other facts

The polar bear lives up to 33 years old. The polar bear has a good sense of smell this means it can smell it’s prey from up to 16km away. The thick white skin on the outside is covering the black skin so it can camouflage into the snow and ice blocks in the water. There are still 22.000-31.000 polar bears left in the world.

Hanging on to the Bottom of the World

This term we have been working on a Production with all the Year 5s, this Production is called Hanging onto the bottom of the world. In this Production my role was to be the bride of Western Australia. In this role I had to run down the stairs because in real life Western Australia didn’t want to share the land because it was the biggest so it took a long time for the other colonies to persuade Western Australia to agree on joining together.

Challenges all the year 5s faced were learning all their lines in the time frame we had which was about one – two weeks to learn them which isn’t a lot of time considering all our after school activities. But I don’t know what we were worrying about because most of us memorised our lines in time.

Some of our highlights were definitely practising on the IWA floor when Australia was painted on it. Another one of our highlights was when we did our first show in front of an audience which was our matinee. It was also a highlight when we did our evening show which by far was our best performance.

I believe that I have grown in my acting and my public speaking. The reason why I have grown in my public speaking is because I was very quiet and didn’t like having to speak in front of a big audience. I also believe that I have grown in my acting  because I have never done it before and never thought that I would be good at it but I was actually very good at it.

Some of the props and costumes we used were veils and tiaras for the brides and bouquets of flowers for the bridesmaids. Some more props that we used were sign posts for the crowd and cricket players, beards for the cricket players, spectators and commentators. We used a lot more props in the play but they are all the ones that were more important.

I think all the year 5s did a great job and I think they should be very proud of their efforts. This play was really funny and enjoyable to be a part of. I would like to give a big thanks to Helen for helping us with all the props and costumes. She has been amazing and very quick to fix things if they broke. I would like to give a shout-out to Ophelia because she had a huge paragraph of writing that she had to memorise and it was very racist but she got through it. I would also like give a shout-out to all the Bruces and Eddies because they had the main role and had so many lines to memorise  and they ended up adding some really funny lines that they made up.

Amal Unbound

Amal unbound is a gripping and sad story by Aisha Saeed. It is about a girl named Amal who dreams of being a teacher. But something strange happens a run to the market. She is then forced to move away from her family and leave everything behind and become a servant for the local landlord to pay her family’s depts. she then gets taken away to khan estate and then releases she will have to find a way to work with other people to bring about a change and to achieve her dreams.

I enjoyed the book because it was filled with detail and leaves you with a cliff hanger. I also like this book because it tells you about the character not at the one time but at different times so their isn’t much to take in. It is an uplifting tale of courage and the fight for justice.

Christmas Holiday!

holy holiday in December were we celebrate Jesuses birthday. Christmas is were we decorate a fur tree with tinsel, colourful lights, and ball balls. The night before Christmas we leave out cookies, carrots and milk for Santa and his reindeer. In the morning we go and look under the tree and there are presents for everyone in your family.

When we have finished getting ready,  we all go to my cousins house and we do something called a secret Santa which is where you buy a present for someone in your family and then you open them one buy one and say thank you “secret Santa”.

Camp Toona!!!!

On the 15th of October our class 5B headed to camp Toonallook for 4 days. We were all very exited about the bus ride because since it was 4 hours we would be able to watch at least 2 movies. Turns out we ended up voting for Mr Bean which was really funny. After the bus ride we unloaded our bags and the girls bags went on the front of the girls tents and the boys went out the front of Lyall hall. We all ate lunch and got told our tent groups and what activity groups we were in and found out what activity we were doing first. I was with Jessie and we went bike riding first. When we got settled in our tent groups we went and got changed and then we went and got our bikes. When we got our bikes we had to do a practice run around the campsite  which took about 5-10 mins. When we had our first little break we had to get into our birthdays in order without talking. After we finished that little game I found out that Charlie (a year 11 student who came on camp with us) and I have the same birthday!

After the bike ride we had some morning tea which was delicious, we had scones with jam and cream. Then we went and got changed into our bathers and water shoes and started heading down to the little mini beach. Personally I found kayaks very hard to control but they are quite fun when you know what you are doing because I didn’t but it was still very fun. I think I improved a lot at kayaking since I have never done it before. That was pretty much the first day at Toonallook. For dinner that night we had burritos which were delicious. When we got changed to go to bed my tent couldn’t go to sleep because we were on camp and who can to be honest.

The next day for breakfast we had cereal. Not that exiting but good enough for breakfast. We were really rushed because the Police boat was coming to visit us for a lesson about water safety. We were all really exited! When we got to the boat we met the two Police offices who were really nice and thought us all about water safety. After we saw the outside of the boat we went to the inside of the boat which had a kitchen, 4 bunk beds, couch and the drivers seat. We also saw Toona storm (which is a boat) start the engine and move very very fast. When we got back to the campsite we had some morning tea and then we got told the rules of the photo rally. A photo rally is basically a scavenger hunt but with pictures and letters. My group did not win but we are still happy with how many photos we found which was 7.

A few hours had gone past and we are starting to pack our bags. We were heading to our expo night which is basically were you put up your tent sleep on a sleeping mat which was super uncomfortable because I didn’t realise till the morning that I was sleeping on a rock the whole night. After we had set our tent up we sat on the wooden logs and waited for burgers for dinner they were delicious. After dinner we played a game of empires which is a guessing game I was bugs bunny but I didn’t get guessed thill the last two people were called out. Then we had to go to bed because it was really late and everyone was super tiered and sort of went to bed straight away.

On the last day everyone was super sad to be leaving Toonallook but breakfast was amazing!! We didn’t do much apart from pack up and eat and play games basically all day so not much to talk about apart from the bus ride how which wasn’t great. So when we got on the bus we voted for what movie we wanted to watch Matilda won but we couldn’t put it on because we were on a gravel road. So when we got of the dirt road we put the movie on but I felt super sick and gross but I’m not the one who vomited the person behind me did it was gross. We stoped some where so that they could clean it but I still felt sick so I sat at the front of the bus. We ended up stopping again for afternoon tea I didn’t eat. When we got back home I told my mum I missed her and that I wrote here a letter.

Camp was so much fun! And exhausting at the same time.

Amazing Diorama

This term we have been looking at the integrated topic the Hard Road Ahead. It was a topic about the Gold Rush and how people were treated in the olden days. When we got back from our camp,Sovereign Hill, we started making a diorama and it took about 4-5 weeks.

Through out this unit I have felt a lot of emotions, including stressed that we wouldn’t finish in the time frame that we had. Another emotion that I felt was annoyed because sometimes my partner wouldn’t listen to my ideas and then he wouldn’t talk about what he was doing. So making a diorama is very emotional and frustrating sometimes.

Some of the 1850s building that I didn’t know they had at Sovereign Hill are the Blacksmiths and the Ash and Dawson builders and coffin makers. This is because I have never really learnt about this topic before and my parents never really told me about the Eureka Stockade battle between the miners/diggers and the police. I found this topic, The Hard Road Ahead, really fun and challenging at the same time. Some of the challenging things were not knowing what to build something out of and sometimes even not knowing where my partner was and even if he was making something that I didn’t know of.

Back then life was tough and ragged because their family could of died when they were very young of they got sick so their living alone with only miners/diggers which was very hard because you wouldn’t have enough money to pay for your gold licence when you were mining.

Some of the PLAs that you needed to show were resilience, communication and collaboration because if you didn’t show any of these PLAs your diorama would have been a mess. And that’s why working together really helps you in life. And if you don’t show any your life is going to be terrible.

The building me and my partner chose was the Confectionery where you can buy boiled sweets and lollies. And they were the best of the best. The store was always busy selling raspberry drops.

Diorama mapping activity

This week we have been recreating an exact map of Sovereign  Hill. Everyone is really happy with how our diorama turned out.

This map is a replica of Sovereign Hill  even though it may not look like it.

What I have learnt about mapping is that you need a title, a key or a legend, a compass and even a scale. There is a lot of things you need to make a map. So if you want to make a map these are the things you need.

Have you ever made a diorama if so what of ?

Have you ever draw a map?

Book week judging panel

This term in library, we have been reading and evaluating the shortlisted books in the information Book category for the CBCA Book Week Awards.

A good information book includes really detailed  and heartfelt visuals, well thought out layout and an even amount of pictures and words in the page.

Another thing that makes a good information book is that they have clear and detailed information this is important because it makes the reader thinks that your a great author.

My favourite book was Sorry Day because  it was really detailed and the layout fit with the story. It also included really detailed information and I just really liked it.

What was your favourite book?

Which one did you choose.
